Man U defeats Chelsea to capture Champions League - video of the shootout

Goal of the week: Fiorentina sends AC Milan to UEFA Cup

Goal of the week according to Gol TV was Osvaldo’s 75th minute goal for Fiorentina against Torino, sealing 4th place in Serie A and a CL place over AC Milan. You know I’m no AC Milan fan, especially since I will be weeping on my Ronaldinho pillowcase as he is shipped over to them.

The last goal was Rivaldo’s goal against Valencia in 2001, back when he still wore the FC Barçelona shirt. The club had to win the last game to qualify for the Champions League, and with the score tied 2 - 2 (Rivaldo having already scored twice), the game in the 90th minute, it looked like a draw was in the cards, which would have sent Valencia into the Champions League. That is, until Rivaldo’s bomb from the edge of the box gave him a hat trick and Barçelona a place in the CL. Ha ha, take that suckas.

In other La Liga news, Valencia didn’t get relegated this year. It’s too bad, because a huge fire sale would have occurred if they had been sent down. And David Villa wouldn’t look too bad in the blaugrana.

In other CL news, two English Premiership teams owned by Americans almost made it to tomorrow’s final, but instead one team owned by a Russian oil baron who has a QUESTIONABLE (as in: should be researched by Amnesty International) past will be in the final. Oh, and it’s in Moscow. Yep. Tomorrow night, feel free to laugh in the faces of any Manchester United fans you happen to see. Chelsea 3, Manchester United 0.

One more thing for El Doctor: what’s this about Joey Barton going to the pokey for six months??

Jason Giambi likes steroids/thongs

Baseball players are legendary for their superstitions, but Jason Giambi’s technique for snapping a batting slump may rank among the strangest : He puts on a gold lame, tiger-striped thong.

“I only put it on when I’m desperate to get out of a big slump,” he told Portfolio.com.

Giambi has shared his slump-breaker with other Yankees New York Yankees , including Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Johnny Damon Johnny Damon , Robin Ventura and Robinson Cano.

“All of them wore it and got hits,” he said. “The thong works every time.”

Clearly, Giambi could use a little help from the golden thong about now. As the Yankees continue to sputter heading into their Subway Series against the equally sluggish Mets New York Mets , Giambi is hitting .188.

But Giambi, in the final season of a seven-year, $120 million contract, said he doesn’t listen to booing by the crowds at Yankee Stadium.

“I never hear the boos because I’m too busy booing myself,” he told Portfolio.com. “No critic is worse on me than me. I can beat myself up pretty good.”

End of the East Coast Bias?

This weekend gives us our first taste of interleague baseball around the country. For many teams this games against their, somewhat forced, “rivals”. ESPN often focuses on the Yankees and Mets Subway Series, typically because at least one of these teams are one of the best in the league. And, as my friends from non-NY, non-Boston areas often point out, there is a perceived media biased for these teams so these games are forced down the nations throat. New Yorkers might also be considered slightly ego-centric and under the impression the world revolves around the tri-state area. This year however finds both the Mets and Yanks generally being disappointments. As a Met fan I can tell you I really don’t care about this series against the Yanks. The Yankees just lost 2 of 3 to the DRays and are a general disappointment while the Mets just lost 3 of 4 to the Nats at home. The Mets need the wins and so do the Yanks but I, and many of my fellow Mets fans, don’t seem to give a shit about the opponent and there is a real lack of buzz. This got me to thinking, if the Subway Series is relatively dull this year, what interleague series this weekend are actually interesting?

Milwaukee Boston: Are Milwaukee for real? Gagné and the pen has really limited them this year but they still have a potent team. Braun is coming alive and it will be interesting to see them match up against the reigning champs.

Dodgers Angels: The Freeway Series (gayest, yet, appropriate name) should be a interesting. I thought the way the Dodgers built there team was terrible but there recent great play has been interesting to watch. The voids that are Jones and Pierre will kill them in the long run and I think a healthy Angels (Lackey just got back, Figgins not to far away) are a better team but at the least these should be more interesting games that their NY counterpart.

Drays St Lo: The two biggest (positive) surprises in baseball going against each other. I doubt either will keep it up (Cards offense is playing too good and the DRays pitching has been playing over their heads) but it has more juice than NY. If any of you have the baseball package I suggest watching the DRays who are a very exciting team. Iwamura is playing lights out, crawford and upton are a joy to watch, and cliff floyd is on the team which is always a bonus. They are winning which helps, but they are playing very loose and are fun to watch.

Det Arizona: Det has to be the biggest disappointment in the game (and ruining my pre-season predictions). They will need to play lights out to overcome their season opening shitfest (and getting swept (again) by the Royals didn’t help). Arizona is an odd team. Their run differential was shit last year and yet they won the west (albeit a shitty west) easily. Again this year they are getting great offensive production from an underwhelming lineup and superb pitching. Should be a fun match up. Webb just went 9-0 but I would have loved to seem him go against the Tigers.

Those are 4 series that are at the least more interesting that the Metros/Yanks this year. Thats a big piece of humble pie for the biggest market in sports.

Alex Rodriguez continues to demonstrate why he is not a cool person. At least he seems uncool. Perhaps in person he is a really nice dude. But if one of my friends passed out like a woman from 1830 you can rest assured I’d be busting his balls about it.

San Jose v Dallas…will it ever end?

I don’t know why or how but I came across the San Jose v. Dallas Game 6 about mid way through the 3rd period tied at 1. As I type this it is intermission…after the 3rd OT. I can’t express how little I care about this game. Yet I’m committed and I can’t not watch this through to the end now. It’s like holding onto those top two pair when there is a flush on the board. You know you are beat but you hold on just because you are pot committed and can’t let it go.

The San Jose keeper, apparently named Evgeni Nabokov, made one of the best saves I’ve ever seen in OT 1. Or 2. I don’t fuckin know…2 hours ago. All I know is that the hated Rangers were eliminated from the playoffs and by the time this game ends they will be half way through their training camp of failure for next season.
