Goal of the week: Fiorentina sends AC Milan to UEFA Cup

Published by Mutante under La Liga, Soccer

Goal of the week according to Gol TV was Osvaldo’s 75th minute goal for Fiorentina against Torino, sealing 4th place in Serie A and a CL place over AC Milan. You know I’m no AC Milan fan, especially since I will be weeping on my Ronaldinho pillowcase as he is shipped over to them.

Newcastle United win Tyne-Wear Derby

Published by El Doctor under Newcastle, Premiership, Soccer

The Geordies beat the unclean mackems by a score of 2-0 in Northeast England’s biggest (and only) derby.

Sad mackem Bastards AKA 2007-8 SAFC team

Michael Owen scored both goals to continue his run of top flight play and further stake claim to his return to England’ national team. The lowly mackems have not defeated Newcastle since 2000 and today’s outcome secures their place as the 2nd (or 3rd if you count Boro) class team in the NE.

More importantly Newcastle were officially removed from the relegation battle and can now focus on building their team for next year in the top flight. Their performance over the past 6 matches and revitalization under Kevin Keegan has also shown that some interweb’s bloggers, who shall remain nameless, don’t know shit.

David Beckham scores his first MLS goal

Published by Mutante under Soccer

Not a goal in a friendly or SuperLiga, but in and MLS game.

Watching it last night, it sure looked offside, and conspiracies immediately started formulating that the MLS would keep that from even being questioned, as the commentators completely swallowed their collective tongue.

Fifa Street 3 - Greatest promo ever?

Published by autonater under Random News, Soccer, YouTube

OK a guy on my soccer team sent this to me, and I quote “Check this out..This has HeyBrewer written all over it.” And for the record, the dude was right, Kudos Geoff.

While I am not an avid gamer, or any sort of gamer really (Kylarrr the Brave!!!), I would definitely play this ish even if it was simply out of respect for the promo. In fact, this game may or may not be out yet, I really have no idea. Irregardless, enjoy. I may or may not add more to this later.

Newcastle United 2 - Fulham 0

Published by El Doctor under Newcastle, Premiership, Soccer

Newcastle United earned an invaluable 3 points at St. James’ this afternoon (morning for me) as they defeated Fulham FC.

Newcastle are now 6 full points clear of the drop zone, have 5 teams between them and relegation, and, perhaps most importantly, finally got a damn win. The last EPL win for Newcastle came against this same Fulham side at the Cottage in December. De. Cem. Ber. That win came on Dec. 15th meaning that Newcastle went the entire season of Winter without a victory.

Interwebs Roundup

A few links to look at while not doing work at your real job today:

An interesting story about 1/4 of the Cuban soccer team defecting so that they can tryout to play for MLS or USL teams. Political ideologies aside, you have to admire the guts it takes to walk away from your family, friends, and teammates to chase the dream of playing soccer (or baseball, whatever) professionally. Sadly, it appears they were horribly misinformed about the quality of soccer in the MLS.

Joe Girardi might miss the Yanks season opener due to a suspension from the ‘fight’ recently.

Baseball has been trying to expand to new markets, particularly in Asia. This continues again this year with exhibition games set to be played by the Dodgers and Padres in China this weekend and the regular season opening in Japan with Oakland taking on the Sawks. While baseball has taken off in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, there has been much less success in China.

Apparently a lot of Men’s Hoops teams hopes died yesterday. It would be a lie for me to say I gave two deuces but I know many of you do.  Baseball can’t start quick enough for me.

The USA is not serious enough about their soccer - Colombia shows us how it’s done

Published by El Gigante under LA Galaxy, Soccer, YouTube

America de Cali and Deportivo Cali, 2 Colombian soccer teams, had a match over the weekend. Near the end of the game, there was some debate towards the end of the game about a no call on a penalty. The coach got really mad and yelled at the ref and the fans shouted “Bullshit, bullshit!”

Oh no wait, this is Colombia, the coach apparently got punched which then erupted into a brawl in the stand which then led to injuries including 18 stabbings! Here is the video:

Newcastle United in Relegation Fight

Published by El Doctor under Newcastle, Premiership, Soccer

Newcastle United lost, again, today at Anfield to Liverpool 3-0. Panic has officially, and rightly, set in on Tyneside as the prospect of the Magpies spending the 2008-2009 in the Coca Cola Championship is becoming more and more a reality. Newcastle’s last win was in Dec. on a relatively fortunate penalty kick that was awarded in extra time. Since then Newcastle have not won in 12 league matches. Newcastle could find themselves with virtually no breathing room between themselves and the drop based on tomorrows action. Here are the ugly standings for Toon fans. The club has in that past 18 months had 2 owners, 3 managers, scores of failed players, porous defense, and an inability to score goals. Other than that things are going well. Kevin Keegan’s return has failed to inspire the players and the magic he once brought to save the team seems to have eluded him for this go around. As each week passes and this abortive season comes to an end it looks like a minor miracle will be needed to keep Newcastle from visiting the likes of Barnsley, Hull and Burnley. Sad times for the Toon faithful.

Pro Evolution 2008 comes out on the PS3 in a week.

Published by Mutante under Soccer, YouTube

Caveat: This post contains zero screenshots of the game itself, and only grainy video footage accompanied by a Greek reggae song about smoking weed.

Whether or not you like soccer (football, futebol, futbol, fu-ess-set-bol), if you like sports games and sports you will love Pro Evolution. In fact, if you don’t rate the world’s most popular game at all, even better, cause then you won’t get caught up in the whining over “official club names and kits” that all the FIFA fanboy nitwits get cramps over. Listen… it’s hard to make a shitty soccer game, just as it’s hard to make a shitty tennis game, or a golf game. The sports themselves are just elegant and simple, and perfect for video gaming. Wearing golf pants, buying tennis racquets and chasing after home runs, the things you do in real life, not so much.
