Goal of the week: Fiorentina sends AC Milan to UEFA Cup

Published by Mutante at 8:17 pm under La Liga, Soccer

Goal of the week according to Gol TV was Osvaldo’s 75th minute goal for Fiorentina against Torino, sealing 4th place in Serie A and a CL place over AC Milan. You know I’m no AC Milan fan, especially since I will be weeping on my Ronaldinho pillowcase as he is shipped over to them.

Neat youtube version, comparing it with Pele’s goal in Victory:

but somehow bicycle kicks and getting into the CL always brings this to mind as well:

The last goal was Rivaldo’s goal against Valencia in 2001, back when he still wore the FC Barçelona shirt. The club had to win the last game to qualify for the Champions League, and with the score tied 2 - 2 (Rivaldo having already scored twice), the game in the 90th minute, it looked like a draw was in the cards, which would have sent Valencia into the Champions League. That is, until Rivaldo’s bomb from the edge of the box gave him a hat trick and Barçelona a place in the CL. Ha ha, take that suckas.

In other La Liga news, Valencia didn’t get relegated this year. It’s too bad, because a huge fire sale would have occurred if they had been sent down. And David Villa wouldn’t look too bad in the blaugrana.

In other CL news, two English Premiership teams owned by Americans almost made it to tomorrow’s final, but instead one team owned by a Russian oil baron who has a QUESTIONABLE (as in: should be researched by Amnesty International) past will be in the final. Oh, and it’s in Moscow. Yep. Tomorrow night, feel free to laugh in the faces of any Manchester United fans you happen to see. Chelsea 3, Manchester United 0.

One more thing for El Doctor: what’s this about Joey Barton going to the pokey for six months??

Mr. Barton will be spending the summer and fall in the confines of the Tower of London. It seems he has a like of the drink (shocking for an Englishman, I know) and when he does drink he seems to enjoy partaking in some hooliganism (again, shocking). Here is what some Brit paper had to say as reported by http://www.nufc.com:

    From The Liverpool Echo, Tuesday:

Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been jailed for assault and affray.

Jailing the 25-year-old Huyton-born midfielder for six months, Judge Henry Globe said: “You delivered many blows and were acting in an extremely violent and aggressive manner.”

Barton, who was described by his barrister as addicted to alcohol, had earlier admitted committing assault and affray in the early hours of December 27.

CCTV cameras picked up the Newcastle United star as he staggered along Church Street, getting involved in two separate altercations.

The camera operators monitoring alerted police after seeing an incident at about 5.30am.

Two men claimed they had been attacked by Barton and officers arrested him and two friends further along Church Street outside a mobile phone shop.

The £6m midfielder, who has one England cap, had been out with friends and family after an ankle injury forced him to miss the Boxing Day game in which his Newcastle United teammates were beaten 1-0 at Wigan.

He spent the New Year behind bars at Walton prison.
