Newcastle United 2 - Fulham 0

Published by El Doctor at 9:30 am under Newcastle, Premiership, Soccer

Newcastle United earned an invaluable 3 points at St. James’ this afternoon (morning for me) as they defeated Fulham FC.

Newcastle are now 6 full points clear of the drop zone, have 5 teams between them and relegation, and, perhaps most importantly, finally got a damn win. The last EPL win for Newcastle came against this same Fulham side at the Cottage in December. De. Cem. Ber. That win came on Dec. 15th meaning that Newcastle went the entire season of Winter without a victory.

Fulham had a strong share of the possession in the 1st half but, outside of a few long distance strikes by Bullard, never really challenged the Toon keeper Steve Harper. Newcastle scored on their first shot in the 7th minute when Mark “Fat Aussie Bastard” Viduka slotted home from the top of the box after some neat ball control.

Newcastle were very unlucky to not be up 3 or 4 goals by the half with Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen, and Faye all coming very close to scoring. Owen had a free header from the 6 yard box which he failed to convert much to the dismay of the Toon faithful who have grown all to accustom to missed opportunities coming back to haunt the Magpies.

The 2nd half was less inspired but Newcastle secured the win late when Geremi’s brilliant free kick service found an unmarked Michael Owen from the 6 yet again, but this time he coolly headed the ball past Kasey Keller. The goal at the Gallowgate end sent the Toon Army into euphoria as the points were secured and Kevin Keegan finally got his first win as Newcastle manager. In typical Toon fashion all is not perfect however as uber-fragile Michael Owen appeared to tweak something with seconds left to play.

NFCU is pretty juiced in PES. Martins and Owen are trucks.

    QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Once we have made sure we are safe for next season, we will go through the squad with Kevin and see where the rebuilding is required” - Newcastle chairman Chris Mort makes an unequivocal promise to give Kevin Keegan the money to purchase at least two new players for each position.

Wow, if thats true that would be nice. Though I think Newcastle have proven money spent on players does not equal success. Boumsong anyone?
