The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Jerry Porter to a 6 year/$30MM deal today. Apparently looking like you’d be a good NFL player is enough to warrant big money deals in this WR thin free agent market.

After Randy Moss, there is a huge drop off in the WR talent pool. ESPN experts rank Bernard Berrian and Donte’ Stallworth as the #2 and #3 available receivers, and the gap between them and Moss is significant. Porter is ranked #8, one slot below the Texans Andre Davis and tied with Ernest Wilford (the player he is replacing on the Jags roster). Wilford is a bigger receiver and will put up similar stats for less money (4 years/$13MM with the Dolphins).

So why overpay Porter, a receiver who time and time again has fallen short of expectations and has been an ungrateful non-team player? I keep hearing/reading about the potential he has, his past performances, his great seasons, etc. Porter will be 30 by the time he plays his first NFL game for the Jags, he’ll be entering his 9th season and his combined stats for the past 2 years are 20 games, 45 receptions, 725 yard, 6 TDs.

I would love to get paid $30MM for putting up those kind of numbers. As for his “previous great seasons,” here’s a quick Jerry Porter quiz for you:

  1. How many 80+ reception seasons does Porter have in his career?
  2. How many 1000+ yard seasons does he have?
  3. How many seasons with 10+ TDs?

Would it surprise you to know that the answer to all of those questions is zero? He had 76 receptions in 2005, 998 yards in 2004 and 9 TDs in 2002 and 2004. I’m not saying that he’s a terrible player, but for $5MM a season I assume the Jags are expecting him to be their #1 receiver (unless the Jags expect 1st round bust Troy Williamson to fit the bill). Based on his previous performances, Porter, at this stage of his career, will never be more than a solid #2 receiver.

So you’re saying you think this is a good deal?

I’d say it sounds more like a Horawful deal. That’s horrible and awful.

El Gigante - You may want to consider a career change.

With your size, speed, and cut Mexican abs, you may actually be able to talk the Jags in to telling Mr. Porter they have changed their minds and will be picking you up instead.

That being said, I did a little research on the google for “El Gigante + 40″.

    This is what came up…?

I’m not saying this is a good deal. If the Jags were looking for a #2 receiver and we’re picking him up for $2MM/year with the majority of the contract being incentives and escalators, then yeah great deal. But $5MM a year to be a #1 receiver? Terrible idea.

I, for one, would love to you attempt it. I’m guessing a pulled hammy during warm-ups puts you on the IR before you get started.

El_Doctor, I appreciate your humor, but let me rephrase my statement. What I meant was that if I was a WR in the NFL putting up #2 receiver numbers, I would love to get paid like a #1 receiver.

As for me, I would be out with back spasms when I bend over to tie my cleats.
