Kimbo Slice Vs. Tank Abbott - Seriously?
HEY! BREWER!
OK this past weekend Kimbo Slice faced Tank Abbott in a highly anticipated idiotic match up between 2 skilled Mixed Martial Artists street thugs.
While this takes me back to the early days of UFC where you saw sophisticated fighting disciplines like “Street Fighting”, “Hard puncher dude” and “Ass beater supreme”, etc. I must admit that the prospect of watching these two guys (Kimbo & Tank) punch each other 3 or 4 times fell pretty low on my “to do” list.
To be totally honest, while I find Kimbo entertaining to watch when he is kicking peoples asses in their back yards, and while I think he will probably get a few good fights in the UFC or one of the offshoot MMA leagues, I think this dude is seriously going to have a hard time winning any real MMA fight. Clearly Kimbo hits hard, but so do a lot of guys, and his Jiu Jitsu is about as good as mine.
That being said, I’m not quite sure why they even bothered fighting Tank Abbott against Kimbo. I’m sure Tank got a few bucks for taking some serious shots from Kimbo, but the poor dude was exhausted after throwing his first punch. Seriously, watch the video and tell me Tank wasn’t gassed after throwing like one, maybe two punches. His technique really has not progressed since he fought in like UFC -4 “Unskilled Fighters Collide”. I’m actually having my mom research this, but I’m pretty sure we have family video footage of me and my brothers engaged in wrastling matches/fights that were more technical than this one.
Speaking of, I’m actually a little surprised that Tank didn’t try to thwart Kimbo with a few famous big brother moves that always worked well for me. A couple more well known moves like the “Behind the leg trip” or the “Figure 4″ would probably have worked wonders. Either that, or attempt to annoy the mighty Kimbo with a “Wet Willy”, “Purple Nurple”,or “The Dreaded Ear Flick”. If those didn’t work, Tank should have tried to confound him with the old “What weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks” or “A plane crashes between california and arizona…where do you bury the survivors” brain teasers. (These work every time.)
Anyway, maybe I will offer my services to Tank, I think he could use them…
…or maybe I should just offer him a beer, he’d probably get more use out of it…

I am glad someone posted that fight because as a MMA fan I couldn’t believe they scheduled that fight. Kimbo is great to watch, but if he is so bad ass why doesn’t he fight someone that actually knows what they are doing? I have read a post or 2 regarding Tank taking a dive, which after watching the fight seems hard to believe, but he also didn’t train for anything, so maybe he took a dive by chillin out and enjoying Miller Lite. Kimbo is a lot like Brock Lesnar, and actually I think Lesnar would ruin him. Either guy is done once he goes to the ground against a jujitsu specialist. I’m so glad that I didn’t waste my money on that ppv.
Tank gassed after throwing two or three punches?? Watch the video again. The guy is winded from walking up to the ring. They meet in the center and walk back to their respective corners and Tank is already huffing and puffing.
As for Kimbo, the dude clearly punches really hard, and I think he has some ground game but hasn’t been able to show it off yet. Keep in mind he has been training with Bas Rutten ever since that epic match with Ray Mercer, so he must have some moves in the arsenal. Regardless, they are setting up against punching bags in order to get his name out there to those who don’t follow YouTube street fights.
If nothing else Kimbo is a showman, he knows what the crowd wants and he keeps them entertained. I figure they will have 2 maybe 3 more bullshit fights for him and then they will put him up against a somewhat legitimate contender.
The thing that sucks is that it took the guy so long to get into MMA. He’s 34 now so more than most likely he’s already peaked in terms of strength, conditioning and stamina. If he had started training with Bas Rutten when he was 24, I don’t think people would be questioning his skills at all.
Dana White, in an attempt to reinvigorate the UFC will eventually pick this guy up and match him up against someone like Houston Alexander.
Dude Houston Alexander(205) would eat Kimbo(234)and his entire crew. I can see someone in one of these side leagues getting him in an arm bar or a heel hook and not letting go when he taps, just snapping him.
Isn’t it funny how ever since MMA was supposed to supplant boxing (the Liddel/Jackson fight), boxing has responded with some great fights (Taylor/Pavlick I, Mayweather/Hatton) and all the big-hype UFCs have been duds?
Until UFC shows a little more consistency, my PPV dollars are still going to prize fights.
I agree, but there have been some really great MMA fights recently. The Wanderlei Silva vs. Chuck Lidell fight was excellent, probably one of the best in a while. Plus, coming up this month is the Henderson vs. Anderson Silva fight which I think will be excellent. Silva has been in top form and Dan Henderson, while he is getting older, is still a beast. If Henderson doesn’t get submitted early it should definitely be a good show. Contrast either of those with the Kimbo/Tank fight and the quality MMA fights are still worth the money any day of the week.
I’d forgotten about Silva/Lidell. That was fuckin awesome. But the other top notch UFCs have been smaller names, which is fine (and, in truth, I’ll totally pay for UFCs anytime), but the marquee matches, for the most part, have been better in boxing than the UFC.
I think I just set a record for excessive punctuation in one sentence.
Yeah, the Silva/Lidell fight was great, the UFC and Chuck both needed that one big time. One thing I think the UFC has done really well is make rock stars out of their big time guys. Lidell, Jackson, and a handful of others are pretty much household names at this point and that’s exactly what the UFC needed.
I would also tend to agree that some of the recent marquee boxing matches have been better quality. I went to both the Mayweather/De La Hoya and Mayweather/Hatton fights and those were both excellent. There was so much energy in the building for both of those fights I was getting goosebumps just sitting there.
The Lidell/Jackson fight was a big let down, but Chuck did get knocked the f*** out, and on that same card we saw Houston Alexander put the beat down on Keith Jardin, which was unreal.
The good thing about MMA is that there are really a bunch of highly skilled fighters (and some not so skilled) that will either show up, or get the isht kicked out of them on any given day. Which, when you think about it, is kinda what we all want to see anyway…
